BRITON FERRY RFC MINI’S
Briton Ferry RFC initiated their mini section in the 2005-06 season. Starting with an Under 8’s team there was immediate interest. The first session had 6 players. The word soon spread and a week later there were in excess of 50 players. This level of attendance was maintained throughout the first month of the season.
As the winter drew nearer the numbers reduced to a manageable 25-30 players. Ages ranged from 5-8 and contained a mix of boys and girls. An under 9’s team was launched in October 2005. These original boys & girls now form the base of an established mini section at Briton Ferry.
In the 2007-2008 season we launched a dedicated Under 7 team. The team of new players has a squad of approximately 15 boys & girls. Their skills and appreciation of rugby have increased tremendously throughout their first season. Credit must be given to the two coaches Paul Hughes and Craig Jewal.
Under 8’s are coached by Mark Davies, Richard Jones and Bobby Davies. The aim of the team is to ensure everybody has equal opportunity and time with the ball. Everybody contributes to the team on a Thursday in training and Sunday on matchdays. The majority of the squad has been together for two or three years. The team enjoyed a successful first half of the season, scoring many tries and tagging well. The team are looking forward to moving in Under 9’s.
Under 9’s are coached by Chris ‘Bushie’ Davies, Mike Arnold and Jon Doyle. The aim of the team is to ensure fair play, encourage each player equally and introduce the contact area of the game. The under 9’s have a squad of around 13 players. These players have progressed from the under 8’s Tag team and a few new introductions this season. In their first season of contact they have acquitted themselves well.
Under 10/11’s are coached by Jason Jones and Steve Wiliams. Due to a lack of consistent numbers the under 10’s merged with the established Under11’s team. The aim of the team is to learn the players new laws e.g. scrums, lineouts and build on their existing skill base. The team has been successful since forming as an under 9’s team. This year the team has bonded well and are working together as a team.
Briton Ferry RFC Mini section will be touring Torquay on April 25th. Thank you for all the hard work to the Fundraising committee (Sam Doyle, Ralph and Paula Jones) and all who have supported. In addition, thank you to Liz Irvine and Margaret for the catering and all the volunteers on Training nights and match days.
